She was formerly Miss Black Texas USA, a finalist in the Miss Black USA "top 10," and Miss Texas' runner-up. She established the Texas Trailblazer Award luncheon, an annual celebration of trailblazing women, in 1996. Since then, it has earned more than $400,000 for one of the biggest domestic abuse shelters in the country. She graduated with a master's in journalism from Florida A&M University at the age of 21. She graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor's degree. Through Coach University, the first coach training institution, she has completed more than 150 hours of professional coaching instruction.
